Cairns Private Hospital is a private hospital owned by Ramsay Health Care Australia Pty Ltd, and has been fully accredited by the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards (ACHS) since 1986.

It is situated centrally within Cairns and within walking distance to retail, shopping and the central business area.

The facility provides a full range of acute services for Tropical North Queensland and has a long history of providing for the community.

The hospital holds a licence from Queensland Health to operate 141 beds.

Surgical unit

Accommodates all general surgery including urological, gynaecological, vascular, ENT, plastic, dental, faciomaxillary and orthopaedics, as well as a multi-use children’s unit.

Medical unit

Accommodates a broad range of medical patients and operates as a “step down” unit for coronary patients.

Women’s unit

The focus of the unit is obstetric services, however, gynaecological patients are also accommodated.

A CTG service is provided for antenatal women. Antenatal classes are facilitated by qualified midwives.

Cardiac services

Incorporates Coronary Care Unit, Cardiac Catheter Laboratory and a post cardiac procedure recovery unit, facilitates the admission, preparation and post procedural care of the Cardiac Catheter patients.

The Cardiac Catheter Laboratory provides services to both private and public patients, made possible through a joint venture with Queensland Health.

Day oncology unit

A five-bed/chair unit provides a day oncology service for all types of cancer treatment.

Day procedure unit

Provides endoscopy, urodynamics service and small procedures within the unit, as well as accommodating all day surgery through the main theatres.

The Day Procedure Unit also provides the admission services for some surgical in-patients. This service is steadily increasing.

Operating suite

The Operating Suite consists of five theatres where specialised and general surgery is performed. Types of surgery include:

Renal dialysis unit

An increasing demand for renal dialysis in the area has prompted another joint venture between Queensland Health and Cairns Private Hospital.

This eight-chair unit is managed by a renal physician and qualified haemodialysis nurses.

This satellite unit provides haemodialysis for medically stable patients, capable of limited self-care. Open Monday to Saturday.

Sleep disorders unit

A two-bed unit open six nights per week, catering for adults and children. The unit provides a diagnosis and treatment service for people with sleep related breathing disorders.

Pre-admission clinic

The aim of this service is to provide a pre-surgical nursing assessment in order to streamline the admission process.
