John graduated from Griffith University in 2008 and moved to Cairns in 2009 to complete his internship at the Cairns Hospital. In 2010 he relocated to rural South Africa where he spent 12 months working as a generalist and furthering his skills in trauma management, infectious diseases and maternity care. Over the next 3 years John travelled widely and worked in hospital emergency departments across Scotland and Darwin. During that time John decided that he would like to return to Cairns and its appealing lifestyle and in 2015 he made it and started working as a registrar with various medical practices around town, eventually joining McLeod Street Medical in 2017. John also does some work in emergency medicine at the Cairns Hospital to keep up his skills.
