Dr Ramesh Durairaj, UK and Australian qualified Geriatrician with an interest in cognitive disorders and stroke medicine.
After completing his tenure as post graduate MD [General Medicine] trainee in India, Dr Durairaj went on to complete training in Geriatrics and Stroke Medicine at Mersey Deanery, UK in 2005. He was invited to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physician in 2006. Dr Durairaj was based in University Hospital Aintree, Liverpool from 2005 to 2015; where for his final 2 years as the Clinical Director of Geriatric Medicine.
He also held Fellowship in Mersey Deanery School of Medicine and acted as the Director of stroke training from 2010 to 2015. Dr Durairaj has keen interest in research and was Research Director of Vascular Neurology at University Hospital Aintree and was primary investigator of many stroke and cognitive clinical trials. Dr Durairaj also sat at the Regional and UK National Stroke Research Network Steering Committee, tasked with directing conduct of clinical trials in UK.
After moving to Cairns in 2015, Dr Durairaj continued his interest in his specialties and is proud of the developments seen in the last 9 years. He gained his FRACP in 2016 and leads the Older People subacute and Rehabilitation ward in Cairns Hospital, as well as providing outpatient care in Memory clinic.
Dr Durairaj is very pleased to be taking the reins from Dr Shirantha Adikari, who has helped with management of Older People at Cairns Private Hospital until recently. He holds Outpatient consultations for Geriatric and Stroke referrals from his clinic at Cairns Doctors at Barr Street and has started as Visiting Medical specialist Geriatrician/Stroke Physician at Cairns Private Hospital from March 2024.
