Ramsay Health Care generates one million kilowatts of solar power as part of its mission to create a healthier planet
Oct 19, 2022
Ramsay Health Care has reached another milestone in its commitment to environmental sustainability announcing it has surpassed one million kilowatts (kw) of solar energy generated as part of its sustainability program.
The sustainability program is part of Ramsay Health Cares’ commitment to fostering healthier people, stronger communities and a thriving planet.
Ramsay Australia National Environment Manager, Sue Panuccio said 11 sites contributed to the one million kw of solar generated since the first site in this program came online in May 2021.
“We currently have 11 Ramsay Health Care sites fitted out with new solar panel systems, with another nine sites expected to be generating solar power by the end of this year,” Ms Panuccio said.
“Generating one million kw of solar is the equivalent of saving 820 tonnes of CO2 emissions, or taking 372 new cars off the roads.
“This is a wonderful contribution towards a healthier planet.”
Ms Panuccio said as well as generating its own solar power, Ramsay is also taking steps to make its energy-usage more environmentally friendly.
“So far 16 Ramsay sites have upgraded their lighting to more energy-efficient LED lights, with another 17 more sites currently in the process of upgrading.
“We expect the completed LED upgrades have saved more than 2,909 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.”
Ms Panuccio also confirmed Ramsay was tracking well toward its goal of replacing more than 50 million single-use plastic items by the end of 2022.
“In March 2020 we began removing single-use plastics from our sites, and the support we received from our teams and patients was overwhelming,” she said.
“We set ourselves the ambitious target of removing 50 million single use plastics from our hospitals by the end of 2022, and with 44.5 million so far successfully removed, I’m confident we can hit our target.”
In June Ramsay Health Care announced it was committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
Ramsay’s Net Zero strategies included switching to renewable energy sources and maximising energy efficiency, reducing anaesthetic gas emissions, cutting waste and boosting recycling, embedding sustainable design in new facilities and upgrades, as well as engaging with suppliers to reduce supply chain emissions.
