Day Rehabilitation

Day Rehabilitation Programs are suitable for people who have established rehabilitation needs and are managed by a Rehabilitation Physician. Day program patients do not require the support of 24-hour medical and nursing care. Many of our inpatients transition to our Day Program once they have gone home.

Our Day Rehabilitation department offers outpatient rehabilitation programs, which are specifically designed to meet individual needs. Our philosophy is to maximize independence through goal setting and active participation.

These programs run over four (4) to six (6) weeks with patients attending two (2) days a week, depending on your needs. The programs involve one-on-one individual therapies and exercise groups in a friendly and empowering environment.

The Rehabilitation Unit offers a range of comprehensive day programs in the following areas:

  • Neurological
  • Falls Prevention
  • Orthopaedic (hip and knee replacement surgery, injury or trauma)
  • Reconditioning following surgery or illness
  • Amputee
  • Pain Management
  • Cancer
  • Cardiac surgery or illness
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Muscle related conditions
  • Other joint surgery (shoulder surgery, ankle fusions, foot surgery)
  • Spinal surgery (fusion, laminectomy and discectomy)
  • Stroke

All rehabilitation programs are approved by Private Health Funds and The Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

On your first day, please present to the Admissions Office, which is located just inside the main hospital entrance. Please bring the following with you:

  • Medication that you are currently taking or may be required to take while attending a program (first visit only)
  • Copy of referral letter and relevant x-rays (unless you have already been an inpatient at Cairns Private Hospital)
  • Private Health Fund and Medicare details
  • Compensation details (if your treatment is part of Workers Compensation or Third Party)
  • Comfortable, loose fitting clothes
  • Supportive walking shoes
  • Any walking aids that you are currently using
  • Hearing aids and glasses, if required
  • Drink bottle
Morning tea or afternoon tea is provided for your convenience. If you have any special dietary requirements, please let our staff know.

The Rehabilitation Day Therapy Department is open varying hours from Monday to Friday.

Your Rehabilitation Specialist along with the Rehabilitation Team will determine the structure of your program.

Generally, outpatients attend two (2) days a week for six (6) weeks, but this can vary depending on your needs. The funding authorities require that outpatients attend a minimum of two (2) therapies, two (2) days a week, for three (3) hours a day.

To attend a Day Rehabilitation Program, patients require a referral from a GP or specialist to one of Cairns Private Hospital's Rehabilitation Specialists or Geriatricians. Once we have received your referral, we will contact you to organise an initial assessment with our Specialist. It will be decided at this assessment what therapies will be most beneficial to you.

Your schedule of appointments will be then co-ordinated with you by our Day Program Co-ordinator.

A Discharge Summary including any follow-up recommendations will be sent to your GP on completion of a day program.
